The haze in Malaysia continues to affect daily life, with the Department of Environment reporting that 40 areas recorded unhealthy air quality on 7 September 2026. Most locations remain in the “unhealthy” bracket, while several parts of Sarawak stay in a higher category.
Air-quality readings show widespread concern
The Department’s Air Pollutant Index Management System classifies air quality into five bands: good (0-50), moderate (51-100), unhealthy (101-200), very unhealthy (201-300) and hazardous (above 300). These thresholds guide public health advisories.
At the latest check, Samarahan in Sarawak posted an API of about 233, and the IPD station in Serian recorded an API near 256. Both figures place the locations in the “very unhealthy” range.
Unhealthy readings were logged in several towns, including Temerloh, Pahang (API 116), Kluang, Johor (117), Melaka City (121) and Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan (130). In Pulau Pinang, Minden measured 133, while Limbang, Sarawak reached 151.
Further locations such as Tangkak, Johor (152), Kimanis, Sabah (152) and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (152) also fell into the unhealthy band. Additional cities reporting similar levels included Alor Gajah, Melaka (153), Taiping, Perak (153) and Labuan (154).

Districts that recorded unhealthy air quality included Batu Pahat in Johor with an API of 155, Pegoh in Ipoh, Perak at 155, Segamat in Johor at 156, Bukit Rambai in Melaka at 156, Petaling Jaya in Selangor at 157, Cheras in Federal Territory at 157, Kuala Lumpur at 157, Banting in Selangor at 158, Kuala Selangor in Selangor at 158, Batu Muda, W.P. at 158, Kuala Lumpur at 159, Klang, Selangor, 160, Tanjung Malim, Perak, 160, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, 161, and Putrajaya, W.P. 161.
A total of 25 districts recorded moderate air quality, and Kangar in Perlis was the only area to register a “good” reading. No region reported hazardous conditions at the time of the update.
In neighboring Singapore, the National Environment Agency reported that on Sunday (6 September) the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index ranged from 73 to 87, placing it in the moderate band, while 1-hour PM2.5 concentrations measured between 38 and 66 µg/m³, which are classified as normal to raised. The agency warned that the 24-hour PSI is forecast to shift from high-moderate to low-unhealthy levels in the coming days as smoke plumes from fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan persist.
