Google’s workforce has increased by approximately 10,000 employees over the six months ending in September 2026, bringing its total staff count to 204,757. This growth occurs amid a broader trend among technology competitors, where firms like Meta and Microsoft have reduced headcounts through layoffs or voluntary departure programs.
The increase stems from a combination of hiring and acquisitions. In March 2026, Google finalized the acquisition of Wiz, a cybersecurity company, which added around 2,000 employees to its workforce. The company has not disclosed how much of the overall expansion came from new hiring versus the integration of Wiz’s team.

This hiring surge follows a period of restructuring. In January 2023, Google announced plans to cut 12,000 positions, representing roughly six percent of its workforce at that time. Since then, it has continued with smaller rounds of reductions, meaning the current growth reflects a mixed approach—expansion in certain divisions alongside continued downsizing in others.
While many peers in the tech industry have adopted cost-cutting measures, Google’s strategy signals a different priority. Its revenue for the third quarter rose by 25% compared to the same period the previous year, providing further context for the company’s continued investment in its workforce. The difference in approach highlights how companies within the sector are responding distinctively to market pressures.
